Hundreds of new affordable homes could soon be built in Tameside on ‘unlocked’ council-owned land. Town hall bosses have signed off on a plan to release land earmarked for housing.

It could mean around 485 new social and affordable homes being built as the council battles to meet the needs of Tameside’s population and tackle homelessness.

The local authority is working with housing providers to build homes quickly on land they no longer need.

Bosses want to build homes that match local need, including family homes, apartments and supported housing.

Council leader Eleanor Wills said: “When I came in as leader just over 12 months ago, it was clear we hadn’t done enough with our housing efficiency. We have worked to look at opportunities for housing and this is why this paper has come forward.

“This is us trying to understand, recognise and change the landscape of housing needs. We want to ensure we have enough quality housing across the Tameside borough.”

She added that a minimum of 60 per cent of these homes will be available for social rent, the lowest price rates.

Speaking before of the executive cabinet meeting on November 26, Coun Andrew McLaren, deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, said: “This is about being ambitious and taking control of our housing future. By using our own land and working in partnership, we can deliver more than just the required percentage of affordable and social homes local people need and reduce homelessness across Tameside.”

Following approval of the plan at the meeting in the Tameside One council building, council officers will begin detailed engagement with housing providers and legal reviews immediately, with site disposals expected to start in early 2026.
