Creative course hailed a success at The Vale

A free creative course for adults not currently in work has been hailed a success after boosting confidence, skills and community connections in Mossley.

Get Creative at The Vale offered 12 weeks of artistic activity to people aged over 16, giving participants the chance to explore new creative skills in a supportive and welcoming environment. The course was hosted at The Vale arts centre and organised by its resident Carnival arts organisation, Global Grooves.

Designed to build confidence as well as encourage social connections, the programme was led by artists Mel Roberts, Ellesse Young and Lizzie Rigby. Workshops included clay work, silk painting and batik, with participants guided through a wide range of creative techniques.

During the course, participants spent three weeks taking inspiration from Carnival masks, producing striking 3D clay structures influenced by myths and cultural traditions from around the world.

They were also given the opportunity to work alongside Global Grooves’ partner organisation, Cabasa Carnival Arts, hand painting three-metre silk flags. These vibrant creations were later used in the Northern Lights Winter Parade in Stalybridge, marking the first time many of the participants had seen their work displayed in a public setting.

Rebecca, one of those who took part, said the course had been transformative.

“Before I came here, I never felt proud of my creative work,” she said. “But I am so proud of the work I've made through the course, and my confidence has grown so much.”

Jane Harris, community engagement lead at The Vale, said the benefits of the programme extended well beyond the workshops themselves.

“I’m really pleased that everyone who attended now feels more connected to the creative community at The Vale and all the opportunities that will open up for them,” she said.

“Some of the groups have already volunteered to support community events at The Vale and others are now making plans for their next steps in creative skills development. We were absolutely delighted to hear that one of the participants has already found employment as a teaching assistant in a local school, where she will be able to use some of her creative skills.”

Get Creative was funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).

From Wednesday 14 January 2026, free drop-in creative sessions titled Wednesday Welcome will run from 1pm to 3pm, with everyone welcome to attend. For more information, email hello@globalgrooves.org or call 01457 238 089.
