Old baths transformation takes huge step forward

The transformation the old Denton Baths site into an apartment block is set to be completed by spring 2027. 

Prior to its demolition in 2020, the swimming baths had fallen into a state of disrepair, leading to the relocation of the leisure facilities to the new Tameside Wellness Centre. After the plot sat vacant for years, planning permission to build 35 apartments was approved in October 2024.

Tameside council has now sold the land, unlocking it so that development can start at the Victoria Street site.

Developers are hoping to start work this month, with an estimated completion date of March 2027 mooted.

The site will now see new affordable homes built there, bringing much-needed housing; improve the area; and support the local people of Denton, according to the local authority.

The land has been bought by Collaborate Living Ltd, working with Irwell Valley Homes. Together, they will build thirty-five rental apartments in a mix of one and two-bedroom homes.

Sitting next to Victoria Park and in close proximity to shops, schools and health centres, it is being touted as an ideal location for new homes. The three-storey building would have 11 apartments on the ground floor and 12 apartments on the two upper floors.

Ample space for cycle storage and 24 parking spaces are also included in the plans. Private gardens and a shared communal garden adjacent to Victoria Park have also been mooted by the applicants.

Coun Andrew McLaren, deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness at Tameside council, said: “This is an important step in making better use of unused land. These new homes will help local people and improve the area, while keeping its character and history. 

“The new plans were shaped by feedback from local residents and aim to fit well with the community.”
