One of the UK’s oldest and boldest brass bands is set to bring festive cheer to Stalybridge this December, as the historic Stalybridge Old Band presents The Best of Christmas Brass.
The concert takes place on Saturday 6 December 2025 at Stalybridge Civic Hall, with doors opening at 7pm and the music beginning at 7:30pm.
Founded in 1809, Stalybridge Old Band holds a unique place in musical history as Britain’s first all-brass band. The group was originally formed by local musicians Thomas Avison and Billy Hall, starting with just eight members. By the 1840s, it had fully embraced the brass format, helping to define a sound that would become a hallmark of British musical tradition.
Set against the backdrop of the beautifully decorated Victoria Market Hall, the evening promises a joyful mix of festive favourites, toe-tapping carols, and brass band classics, performed by some of Tameside’s finest musicians.
The concert forms part of a growing programme of cultural events at Stalybridge Civic Hall, which has become a lively hub for live music, comedy, theatre, and community celebrations that attract audiences from across the borough and beyond.
Councillor Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the magic of live brass music in a truly festive and unique setting. The recent and very brilliant Candlelight Concert sold out in October, so we know there’s lots of music lovers across the borough. We are really excited to welcome the community for a night of big sounds, big smiles, and festive cheer.”
Tickets are just £5 and are expected to sell quickly. They can be booked online at www.intameside.co.uk/christmasbrass
