Calls to reject Shire Hill demolition

Glossop and District Heritage Trust is asking councillors to reject an outline planning application that would see the demolition of the former Shire Hill Hospital.

Members say the Bute Street buildings which once housed the town’s workhouse and infirmary are an important part of Glossop’s heritage.

Old Glossop Residents’ Association is also fighting NHS Property Services Ltd’s application which goes to High Peak Development Control Committee’s meeting on Monday.

They are against proposals to tear down all the buildings and residentially develop the site on traffic grounds and because of Shire Hill’s importance to the village.

Planning officers are recommending councillors refuse the application.

They say the proposals would result in the total loss  of a ‘significant non-designated heritage asset.’

Planners consider that the proposed scheme raises matters of ‘insufficient and inconsistent information to properly assess matters of bio-diversity in relation to bat species and barn owl nesting.
