Electricity storage site plans for New Mills

Plans have been submitted for an Energy Storage System to be created on land off Marsh Lane in New Mills.

The proposals include a substation and control room, auxiliary transformer with 4m-high acoustic fencing and 3m high security fencing.

The application also covers changes site levels and associated access, landscaping, and site infrastructure.

Once operational, the site would have the capacity to import 30MW of electricity from New Mills Substation (NMS) at times of excess supply.

This is needed the power generated through renewable energy is not constant as it depends on the weather.

The excess electricity would be stored in the energy storage system (ESS) on site and then be transmitted back to NMS at times of peak demand when there is insufficient supply to meet demand.

If given the go-ahead, the equipment would be expected to reach the end of its operations life after 50 years and would then be decommissioned.
