Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has confirmed it "remains committed" to improving facilities at New Mills Fire Station, despite shelving plans for a replacement.

The decision to defer the replacement of the station on Low Leighton Road was made at a recent meeting of the Fire and Rescue Authority, with concerns cited over the affordability of the project.

In February 2021, the Authority's Capital Construction Programme for 2021-2025 approved the replacement of fire stations at Glossop, Matlock and New Mills. After surveying the sites, Glossop and Matlock stations were prioritised with the aim of completing construction by 2025.

Building costs for Glossop and Matlock have since increased by £1,320,000 and £1,400,000 respectively.

A new survey will be undertaken to establish what refurbishments can be made at New Mills Fire Station in the interim.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire FRS said: "In February 2021, the Fire & Rescue Authority approved the replacement of New Mills Fire Station with the aim of completing the construction by 2025.

"At the Fire & Rescue Authority Meeting held on 28 July 2022, Members approved the recommendation to defer the replacement of New Mills Fire Station after considering its affordability following reports into challenges within the construction industry, significantly increased material and labour costs, supply chain issues and continuing rises in the rate of borrowing.

"A new condition survey will now be undertaken to establish what refurbishments can be made at New Mills in the interim, while new build plans are revisited with partners to explore further opportunities for economies through collaboration.

"Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service remains committed to ensuring that New Mills has a fire station that meets the needs of the local community both now and in the future."

High Peak MP Robert Largan has expressed his disappointment with the decision to defer the replacement of New Mills Fire Station.

He said: “The Fire Brigade do an incredible job locally, putting themselves in harm’s way to keep us all safe. I want to thank everyone at New Mills Fire Station and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service for all their hard work.

"I also want to reassure New Mills residents that I will be fighting hard to get the investment we need to boost fire coverage."
