Former councillor and mayor, George Wharmby, has been honoured with a High Sheriff of Derbyshire Award in recognition of his services to Derbyshire and the local community, particularly in Glossop.
The award ceremony took place at Tissington Hall on Wednesday 18th March, however George and his wife, County Councillor Jean Wharmby, were unable to attend due to being on holiday. The award, presented by Sir Richard FitzHerbert, Bt, was therefore received on his behalf by their son, George John Wharmby (the 5th George Wharmby!). George snr was then presented with the award at a later date at Dinting Church.
The award recognises George’s longstanding commitment and dedication to public service and community life. His extensive record includes:
- Derbyshire County Councillor: 2005-2013, 2017-2021
- Chairman of Derbyshire County Council: 2011-2013, 2017-2018
- Mayor of High Peak Borough Council: 2016-2017
- President of Glossop Royal British Legion
- Alderman Derbyshire County Council
- Parish Councillor for Charlesworth Parish Council
Speaking about the recipients of the awards, Sir Richard FitzHerbert, Bt, said: “I have the utmost respect for them, who all put others above themselves.”
Cllr Jean Wharmby, said: “I am so proud of George. He loves working and representing the community.”
A High Sheriff Award is an honour presented by the county’s High Sheriff to recognise individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to their community. Awards are typically given to those who go above and beyond in areas such as volunteering, public service, charity work or community support.
