Hadfield photographer honoured at awards ceremony

A Hadfield photographer is the people's choice for the Pet category of The British Photography Awards.

Jessie Lee, a dog and equine photographer, took a photo of her 10-month-old Chocolate Labrador, Nellie, and her partner, James, in Bankswood Park last year (see main picture). 

The shot went on to be shortlisted for the prestigious British Photography Awards and in an online ceremony held on March 31, it was named People’s Choice Winner in the Pet category.

Each of the 19 judging categories has a People’s Choice award, where the public votes for their favourite photograph.

Jessie added: “I found out I won on the night of the awards ceremony, so it was a complete surprise. The awards ceremony was supposed to be at the Savoy in London, but due to Covid it was online.

“They have online virtual galleries where you can look at all the images shortlisted on their website. I'm hoping in the future I’ll be lucky enough to be shortlisted again, so I get to attend the proper awards ceremony!”

Forgoing the champagne, Jessie celebrated her win with dessert - mindful that she had work at 6am the next day. With lockdown lifting, she can begin taking photographs again and attending events.

She added: “I am continuing with my Daisy Day project. This is where, once a month, I photograph an elderly or terminally ill horse or dog coming to the end of their life.

“People can enter on my website, and I pick one at random for their own daisy day photoshoot. There’s a £30 donation required if selected and the entirety of that goes to the charity Oldie’s Club, which is all about finding loving homes for older dogs”.
