Hayfield Apple Day and Fair returns on Saturday (9 October), offering its range of exhibits and entertainments for all the family.

Held at Hayfield Primary School, and organised by Sustainable Hayfield, the free event showcases ways of alternative, more responsible living, whilst providing fun and enjoyment along the way.

It’s the first sizeable public event to be held in Hayfield since the start of the pandemic and will run from 1pm to 4.30pm.

Sustainable Hayfield Chair, Cath Moss, said: “A range of people have said to us how much they’re looking forward to what is always a popular event, given the privations people have been through. And so are we!”

For children, there’s apple pressing and toasting, ‘art in the woods’ using natural resources, campfire and den making, storytelling in a tepee, orienteering activities, stone painting, children’s games, and a Creative Kids’ Show.

There will also be displays by local organisations, sales of upcycled and recycled wood products, glassworks and jewellery, plant sales, wellness sessions, and advice and information about energy use, moorland restoration, ‘citizen science’ and green living.

A harvest festival service from local churches is scheduled and musical accompaniment will come from a local bluegrass band. Home–made refreshments and cider sales are also on the menu.

The Transition New Mills’ ‘Repair Café’ which will be operating with the scheme’s volunteer experts fixing items such as small furniture items, domestic electrical equipment and toys people can bring with them on the day.

And the primary school’s bike refurbishment scheme will be showing visitors what they do with donated, often damaged, bikes, which they restore and supply to those in need.
