Tameside and the High Peak will start the new year with a double yellow weather warning for wind and snow.
The Met Office predicts ‘heavy and persistent snow’ will arrive on Wednesday morning and continue through to the early hours of Thursday.
The alert covers most of northern England, with 2-5cm of snow expected in low-lying areas and up to 20-25cm in the uplands, exacerbated by strong winds causing snow to drift.
A deep area of low pressure could also bring gusts of 50-60mph across the whole of England and parts of southern and eastern Scotland, with speeds reaching as high as 75mph in exposed spots and around the coast.
"There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel,” said a statement from the Met Office, adding that rural communities could be cut off and damage to infrastructure could potentially cause power cuts.
Both weather warnings are expected to end by 3am on Thursday, January 2.
