Will trains ever stop in Gamesley to let people get on and off? That's what villagers were asking 75 years ago and it seems for a long time before that!
The Glossop Chronicle carried a report in its May 10, 1946 edition, headed Gamesley Halt.
The story read: “The electrification of the line will naturally awaken the controversy about a ‘halt’ at Gamesley.
“A halt is literally a station and whilst the staff is not as comprehensive as that at a recognised station, the halt does need to be adequately staffed.
“There has been a request for this halt from Gamesley and Charlesworth people over a long number of years and the Charlesworth people are pressing their claims through Chapel Council and requesting the support of Glossop Town Council.
“They must no doubt feel that if they do not succeed whilst the electrification is progressing that their request might as well be abandoned.”
The Chronicle ended its report by saying: “From information that has reached us we are inclined to think they are likely to be disappointed.”
So when will Gamesley get a station?
There are locked gates at the side of the Bluebell Wood pub on Glossop Road leading to land where it is said that a station is likely to built.
But Gamesley and Charlesworth people won’t really be convinced until they start laying the platforms.
