The headline in the Glossop Chronicle 75 years ago this week was certainly dramatic.
It read - Children Sabotage Lighting Scheme.
Basically it was all about youngsters damaging street lamps, mainly by throwing stones and smashing the glass panelled box that contained the gas mantles.
Cllr JH Cuthbert claimed that Glossop’s repairs, which had been neglected by the war, were being ‘hindered by wilful damage’.
In those days, most of Glossop’s streets were illuminated by gas and parts for the lamps were in short supply.
The councillor said: “Police cannot be posted in every street to catch the culprits, but if every lamp is to be made ready for the next lighting season (winter) the damage must be prevented.”
The council decided to appeal to residents to help stop children smashing the lights and to ask schools to have a warning word with pupils.
