Longdendale's chain of reservoirs were already full to the brim so urgent action was needed when more rain arrived.
The start of 1987 was marked with a succession of downpours so heavy that the water authority had to get rid of 350 million gallons.
As always, in those days, the water was sent into reservoirs with extra capacity, with the rest sent flowing into the river network.
The operation, which probably lasted a few days, made big news and our 'cut out' from the Chronicle showed how we covered the story in the second week of January 1987.
The rather faded clipping reveals an area around Bottoms Reservoir, Tintwistle, and a flooded field in Brookfield, where the cellars of the appropriately named Spring Tavern, were also under water.
