Glossop used to have what was called a ‘long weekend’ which took place annually in the middle of September and lasted three days from Friday to Sunday.
Factories closed, a travelling fair arrived and pitched its rides, stalls and other attractions on the market ground and some folk went to the Blackpool ‘lights’.
Apart from the illuminations all that is a thing of the past, but it was great while it lasted and in 1946 it was a time that Glossop children had been looking forward to for years - the fair was here.
The marketground was packed with the likes of the dodgem cars, the ‘jungle ride’ and the ‘waltzer’.
Because the rides cost money and there was not much about, Alderman Richard Sellers, who in his day raised thousands of pounds for charity, stepped in.
He brought a couple of donkeys and gave children free rides and, because most Glossop kids had never been in a car before, gave free car tours of Glossop.
