A reading challenge to help children discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around them is taking place this summer.
Open to youngsters across the county, the science-themed Summer Reading Challenge has been developed by The Reading Agency and is being delivered in partnership with Derbyshire County Council’s library service.
It is designed to inspire children’s imagination, provide much needed entertainment, and help ensure that primary school children’s reading doesn’t ‘dip’ over the summer.
Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said: “It’s vitally important that children keep up their reading skills over the long summer break and the Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to do that. It also introduces them to all that our libraries have to offer them.
“Encouraging children to read independently and helping them to develop a love of reading and books has huge benefits for their development and educational achievement.”
Libraries will be hosting a number of free events to entertain children over the summer holidays, including the magic of dry ice, fingerprints, analysis of evidence workshops, science magic shows and many science-related crafts.
The challenge is free to join and runs until 3 September.
