Special ceremony in Glossop park to remember the fallen

SERVICE: The Rose Garden in Manor Park.

A Glossop garden of remembrance will be the scene of a special service this Sunday (10 July) and the organisers are hoping for plenty of support.

The event, at 3pm in Manor Park’s Rose Garden, will be in remembrance and thanksgiving in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The service will reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women in two world wars and other conflicts.

The service is expected to start with a procession which will include Glossop Army Cadets and parade marshal David Halligan at 2.45pm.

It will start from outside the park cafe and march through the park to the garden to the music of Glossop Old Band.

The commemoration is being organised by Glossop branch of the Royal British Legion and Cllr George Wharmby, who run the annual Poppy Appeal, says everyone is invited.

The service is being led by the Rev Norman Shaw, who will tell the gathering: “We have come together to remember those who gave their lives in service of their country.

“We also meet today to give thanks for the 70 year reign of her Majesty the Queen and to acknowledge the dedicated service her Majesty has given and is continuing to give.”

The service will be similar to the Remembrance Day services with the familiar prayers and hymns and featuring the Last Post, Reveille and the Kohima epitaph.

The Rose Garden was once a pivotal part of Glossop’s wartime commemorations and it is said that a rose was planted for every Glossopdale serviceman who died in the First and Second World War.

It was also the scene of the town’s annual Drumhead service which reflected the wartime tradition of holding battlefield services where drums were piled together to create altars.
