A Hadfield woman has completed an incredible 130km trek along the famous Portuguese coastal route of the Camino de Santiago, raising vital funds for local charity Mummy’s Star.
Sophie Skelly, 23, a secondary school teacher, took on the gruelling challenge over four days - walking the equivalent of two and a half marathons and a 10k, while carrying 10kg on her back in scorching temperatures of up to 32°C.
Reflecting on her journey, Sophie said:
“My Camino walk was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. Covering almost 100 miles across six days was physically demanding - the same distance as two full marathons, a half marathon, and a 10k. We carried all our luggage with us, weighing 10kg, and with the heat reaching up to 35 degrees, it really pushed me to my limits. There were moments when I wanted to give up - I even lost a few toenails and had blisters on my feet - but everyone’s kind words and support at home, and knowing I was doing it for such an important cause, helped keep me going. I’m very proud of myself for completing this challenge and I’ve been able to learn and grow from the journey.”
She added:
“I chose to support Mummy’s Star because it’s a small local charity that helps so many families and truly makes a difference. I wanted to do my bit to raise awareness and support for their amazing work.”
A spokesperson for Mummy’s Star said:
“We’re so proud of Sophie for taking on the Portuguese coastal route in support of Mummy’s Star. Her determination and compassion shone through her challenge. Every step she took helps us provide vital support to our mums and families at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.”
Mummy’s Star is the only charity in the UK and Ireland dedicated to supporting families where the mum or birthing parent is diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy or within 12 months of giving birth. The charity provides tailored emotional, practical, and financial support to help families navigate diagnosis, treatment, and life beyond.
