Sustainable Hayfield hold protest over Government's coal decision

A protest at the Government's decision to allow the development of a new deep coal mine in Cumbria has been held in the High Peak.

Members of Sustainable Hayfield held a short protest last weekend, in cold conditions, to raise their concerns over the move.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Chair Cath Moss said: “This decision makes a mockery of the government’s professed intent to achieve net zero by 2050.

“The International Energy Agency has declared that there should be no new developments of fossil fuel resources if governments are serious about climate change.”

She said the move would increase global emissions and have an impact on the UK’s legally binding carbon budgets.

Group members have resolved to write to High Peak’s MP, Robert Largan, on the matter, with several letters already sent.
