Weather warning as 80mph winds set to bash Glossop and Tameside

A yellow weather warning is in place for Glossop and Tameside as Storm Lilian is set to sweep across the region with 80mph winds.

The alert is in place for between 5-11am tomorrow, with forecasters predicting “strong winds, which may lead to disruption to travel and infrastructure on Friday morning.” 

As well as the local area, the warning covers most of northern England, and will affect campers at the Leeds Festival, which takes place this weekend. 

“Whilst there remains some uncertainty about the details, some very strong winds are likely to develop, with gusts widely in the 50 to 60mph range, with a lower chance that a small core of winds gusting 65-75 mph, perhaps 80 mph, could push quickly east during the morning,” reads a statement from the Met office. 

“These winds are likely to affect major routes such as the M6, A66 and A1(M), as well as potentially impacting infrastructure.  

“As well as the strong winds, some locally heavy rainfall will add to the difficult travel conditions.” 

The weather front will push eastwards through the day, with meteorologists warning people about potential danger to life from flying debris. 

Damage to buildings, travel disruption and power cuts are all a possibility. 

“Prepare to protect your property and people from injury,” the statement continues. “Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include: bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.” 

Two other weather warnings are in place in southern and easter Scotland tonight and tomorrow.
