Work under way to extend Glossop cemetery

With space running out at Glossop cemetery, work is under way to extend the site and provide additional burial space.

It is estimated the cemetery will run out of space in two years, but the extension will provide a further 20 years space for graves based on current burial numbers.

High Peak Borough Council has appointed specialist contractors to oversee the work.

Council Leader, Councillor Anthony McKeown, said: “Land adjoining the cemetery was purchased by the Council some years ago. It was purchased to ensure we have enough space at the cemetery to meet the future needs of Glossop residents.

“There is still some space available, but we are now at the point where additional grave space will be required to keep the cemetery ready for the future.

“Whilst this work needs to take place, we are very mindful to minimise the impact on people visiting the cemetery. To do this, we have appointed some specialist advisors to work with our officers to oversee this project.

“We are working to ensure that the works will have as little impact on the local environment as is possible with these types of works.”

The extension work at the cemetery is expected to be finished by the end of October.
