A 15th Century silver chalice was the star exhibit at Denton’s famous black-and-white church in a fascinating display of the town’s past.
Local industry and everyday home life were featured along with many precious artefacts representing more than 430 years of history at St. Lawrence’s.
The Tudor church dated back to 1531 when it was known as Denton Chapel.
The ancient Communion chalice engraved with the words ‘The coppe for the Lord’s table’ could be viewed in the exhibition in the church’s side chapel.
Other items included silverware from the 17th and 19th centuries, a stone dated 1473, which may have been incorporated in the original chapel, and a centuries-old piece of stained glass.
Miners’ lamps made in Denton by Oldham’s (Oldham Batteries), a metal iron, a Denton hat and a child’s high chair also attracted plenty of interest.
Roy Cooper of Circular Road, Denton, put together most of the exhibition, with several items loaned by Denton Library.
