Knife found near children's park

Police discover the knife during a weapon sweep initiative.

A knife was discovered by police during an operation near a children’s playground in Oldham yesterday (Tuesday).

Officers from Operation Vulcan, supported by the Oldham district and Specialist Operations Departments, conducted a search of the play area on Henshaw Street, as part of ongoing weapon sweep initiative.

During the search, police recovered a knife which had been concealed in the small, wooded area surrounding the park.

It is the latest result from the Vulcan team who found a firearm in Derker last week.

Detective Inspector Lee Newburn, Operation Vulcan, said: “This weapon sweep was conducted as a preventative tactic around serious violence in the area. The knife was safely and forensically recovered and will be examined by expert officers.

“Operation Vulcan is currently deployed in Derker and officers are continuing to make Oldham’s streets safer.

“The operation sees a team of dedicated GMP officers and partners carrying out sustained, strategic disruptive activity to directly combat the issues which the community tell us are affecting them the most.

“Today’s seizure is another significant result for the Vulcan team and we have managed to remove a dangerous weapon from the streets.”
