Major Eddy Hardaker.

A man who has dedicated his life to public service has joined a major campaign for better and safe parking for patients, carers and NHS staff at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Major Eddy Hardaker has joined Our Campaigns as the Chair. A lifelong Oldhamer, Major Hardaker serves with the 75 Engineer Regiment and has dedicated his life to public service since joining the Armed Forces in 1979.

He brings extensive experience of leadership and operations from his distinguished military career, alongside decades of community service and charitable involvement across Oldham.

Major Hardaker was awarded a Military Commendation for his work in Afghanistan in the New Year Honours List 2011, in recognition of his heroic service and life-saving work - a true testament to his courage, integrity and dedication to others.

Major Eddy Hardaker, Chair, Royal Oldham Hospital Parking Campaign said: “I am honoured to take on this role with Our Campaigns.

“Having lived in Oldham for many years, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges faced by patients, carers, and NHS staff trying to access hospital services.

“No one should be made to feel anxious or delayed when seeking or providing care. This campaign is about fairness, compassion, and practical solutions.

“I’m looking forward to working with residents and hospital partners to find a way forward that improves access and supports the incredible work our hospital team does every day.”

Dr Zahid Chauhan OBE, who is spearheading Our Campaigns explained that they were determined to lead a positive and constructive movement, one that works hand-in-hand with the hospital and for the community it serves.

He added: “I want to thank Major Hardaker for standing with us and with the people of Oldham.

“His leadership and commitment will help ensure that this campaign remains focused on collaboration, compassion and real improvement for patients, carers and NHS staff alike.”

Dr Chauhan has a long record of public service as a longstanding councillor in Oldham, where he served as Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Deputy Mayor and Mayor (May 2023 – May 2025). In May 2025, he was admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Oldham in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community.

He is a charity founder and community leader dedicated to tackling inequalities. Dr Chauhan is also the founder of the Homeless Friendly charity, which makes healthcare more accessible for people experiencing homelessness and was awarded an OBE for this work.
