Bloods' captain retires due to heart issue

Droylsden captain, George West, has been forced to retire after being diagnosed with a serious heart condition.

The former Hyde and Stockport County forward scored 29 goals in 31 games for the Bloods, before a heart attack in January ruled him out for the season.

Tests revealed he had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, which can impair its ability to pump blood around the body.

West, 28, spent ten years playing for non-League clubs around the North West, including Lancaster City, Clitheroe and Sandbach United before joining Dave Pace’s side last summer.

Droylsden’s X/Twitter account said he will be “massively missed in our playing squad, but the club will continue to support George through what is the most difficult time in his career”.

His final appearance was a 10-minute cameo in Droylsden’s last home game of the campaign, a 5-4 thriller against Eccleshall.

Meanwhile, Liam Moran has been confirmed as the Bloods’ first summer signing. He rejoins after impressing towards the end of the 2023/24 season, in which they finished 5th in their first season at Step 6.
