Celtic back to winning ways

Stalybridge Celtic recorded their first victory since January 6 on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Newcastle Town.

After an agonizing number of unfortunate draws across the past few months, Celtic were finally able to get over the line and seal all three points.

The home side flew out of the blocks, taking the lead after just 11 minutes through top scorer Aaron Dwyer who turned in a cross from Darius Osei to put his side ahead.

Just minutes later, visitors Newcastle were presented with an opportunity to level the scoring from the spot after Jake Avery was brought down inside the area.

This opportunity was not taken, with Celtic goalkeeper Luke Hewitson diving superbly down to his left to deny Tommy Van Der Laan before producing another fine save to deny Callum Holland on the follow-up.

Just before half-time, the away side were handed a chance to atone for their earlier miss in the form of another penalty, which was this time awarded for handball.

Jake Avery would make no mistake from the spot, smashing the ball down the middle to draw his side level.

But the visitors were not level for long, with Celtic regaining the lead in first-half stoppage time through Aaron Dwyer, who powered his header beyond the goalkeeper to get his second of the afternoon.

In what was a relatively uneventful second-half, James Kinsey’s men were able to see the game out and record a crucial victory.

The win sees Celtic sit in eighth place in the Northern Premier League West table, just four points outside the play-off positions.

Next up for them is an away trip to Vauxhall Motors this weekend.
