Former Stalybridge loanee helps Everton progress

Former Stalybridge Celtic loanee Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Everton progress in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The England Under-21 international striker scored twice as Marco Silva's Toffees won 2-0 at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday to advance to the fourth round of the competition. 

While at Sheffield United, Calvert-Lewin made his senior debut during a youth loan at Bower Fold in December 2014. 

He scored twice on his debut in a 4-2 win at local rivals Hyde United and scored against them again in the reverse fixture in a 7-1 win a few days later. 

At the beginning of February 2015, Calvert-Lewin returned to his parent club, having scored six times in five appearances. 

The 22-year-old then had a loan spell at Northampton Town before joining Everton in August 2016. 

His brace at Hillsborough means the forward, who scored in the final when England Under-20s won the World Cup in 2017, has now netted 18 goals in 99 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees - registering 10 assists as well. 

He was saluted by his boss after Tuesday's game, as Silva told reporters: "Dominic was the striker who (has) started more games with me this season. He’s the striker with more time on the pitch, playing more games as well.

“It was important for him to score twice. He had another chance to score to make it a hat-trick, but he did well, scoring at an important moment in the game. It’s important to him that he’s now got three goals in his last two games. Let’s hope he can continue in this way." 

Calvert-Lewin could bring up a century of appearances for the club when they host champions Manchester City at Goodison Park on Saturday.
