Harold celebrates his 100th birthday

Harold Gane is a true legend at Denton Golf Club where he has been a member since 1967 and he celebrated his 100th birthday in style at his beloved club with friends and family.

Harold was born at Manor Farm in Haughton Green as the middle of three sons and he has remained true to Tameside ever since.

He started school at the age of three and left at 14.

He worked on the farm for a short while and then went to work for a haulage firm in Ashton-under-Lyne before he was called up to the Army in the Second World War, where he spent three years in India.

After leaving the Army he worked at Wilsons Bakery in Ashton-under-Lyne on vehicle maintenance.

It is here that he met his wife Audrey, his wife of 66 years and they had one daughter Sandra.

He later trained as a motor claims assessor and went on to set up his own assessors business.

Golf-wise he joined Denton GC in 1967 and was Captain in 1977 and President in 1981 and was also the club’s first membership secretary- which -according to him - are his golfing highlights and he is still a Denton member today.

Harold puts his remarkable fitness at his age down to playing both football and cricket in his younger days and then golf and now his 15 minutes a day on his treadmill!

At his 100th birthday celebrations were his birthday card signed by King Charles and Queen Camilla, a range of pictures across the years as well as some press stories about his achievements.

Harold has always enjoyed playing the Denton course especially with his old friends Ron Bagnall, Major Chamberlain. Frank Arrandale and Roy Henshaw.

His golfing idol was Julius Boros because of his impressive slow swing which he claimed improved his own swing through watching him.

Harold had a fabulous day, well staged by Denton GC, celebrating his birthday with a lovely birthday cake and being amongst all of his friends he has known for years and they all said how they too had enjoyed the day.
