Hyde CC lose nail biting Cheshire Cup final against Didsbury

After finishing the Cheshire County Cricket League in an agonising second place last weekend, Hyde again fell at the final hurdle in the Cheshire Cup final against Didsbury yesterday.

Didsbury won the toss and chose to field on a beautiful day on Werneth Low.  

Openers Luke Young and Tom Partridge were both seen off for 15 and 9 runs, respectively, before Kesh Fonseka came out swinging to bash 38 runs from 29 balls.  

The Lancashire youngster became the first of Nick Anderson’s three wickets, with the key scalps of Rian Maisuria and Adam Worrall joining him – the latter for a duck. 

The cup holders struggled for their usual fluency at the crease, although a resolute 19 from Cole Turner’s hour with the bat stemmed the Didsbury attack. 

Turner, batting at number eight, became the last Hyde wicket to fall for a subdued 149 all out, Anderson catching him from Will Street’s bowling, with both Didsbury men posting figures of 3-22. 

In reply, the visitors got off to a nightmare start. Thomas Hafil and Jack Airey were both sent to the pavilion for two runs between them, with Joe Cooke the top order’s highest scorer for just 15, with Andrew Jackson tearing through them for 3-16. 

With Didsbury wobbling on 46-6, man of the match Anderson conjured a captain’s innings, nursing an assured 79 not out from 68 balls, while those around him tumbled. 

James Chew merrily chipped away at the tail to take 3-15 until, needing 12 runs from the final over, Anderson clobbered two sixes off the left-arm seamer to win the cup by one wicket and sum up Hyde’s nearly men season in a dramatic microcosm.
