Match Report: Glossop 17-41 Aspull

The Hillmen got off to a great start at Hargate Hill, as flyhalf Tom Dearnaley slotted a penalty, conceded by Aspull straight from the kick off, to lead 3-0.

This was followed by a surging run from young forward Cole Johnstone, who found the supporting Chris Sonczak on his inside, to tough down. Dearnaley converted to give the home side a pleasing 10-0 advantage.

The visitors responded swiftly though as their speedy left winger rounded the Glossop defence.  The try was converted to reduce the deficit to 10-7.

The visitors quickly repeated this feat after Glossop spilled the ball in midfield and the conversion suddenly saw the home side behind at 10-14.

It seemed the Glossop forwards had learnt their lessons from the previous week and were very solid on their own scrums and lineouts, with Number 8 Tom Raine particularly dominant with a series of powerful breaks from the base.

However, the home side were continuously chasing shadows as the visiting sides back three continued to wreak mayhem.

The “Emus” then went in for their third try, this time through their right wing to lead 19-10.

The same winger then went in for his second, which was converted to lead 26-10 at half time.

Glossop’s bench was brought in to play, with veteran winger Si Cassell, adding some experience to the back line.

In the forwards, Danny Morris and Joe Dearnaley were producing powerful runs and this resulted in Dearnaley crashing over for Glossop’s second, which brother Tom converted to bring them closer at 17-26.

That was to be it for Glossop though, as Aspull scored another converted try and followed this up with a penalty to lead 36-17.

The visitors had the final say as well, with yet another try scored on the wing to take home the spoils with a  deserved 41-17 win.

The coaching team of Clark and Brammer along with Skipper Zak Round will feel the need to tighten up the defence before next weeks visit to Heaton Moor.

The second team had a 67-8 win at home against Aspull 3rds, in a hastily arranged “friendly” fixture as expected opponents Altrincham Kersal forfeited the planned league game.

A few weeks ago on these pages, after Latics had lost three games in a row, conceding three goals in each game, I wrote them off for the season. Consolidation achieved, but with an unfulfilled objective to entertain and compete. Latics have won four games and drawn two, including last week’s stand-off against leaders Bromley at Hayes Lane, and the season is back in the balance. Tranmere Rovers were there to be hammered at Prenton Park, and Latics obliged. Tequila!
