Match Report: Hyde United 2-2 Gainsborough Trinity

Hyde United came from behind twice to rescue a point against Tuesday’s opponents Gainsborough Trinity at the Project Solar Stadium.

The point means Hyde remain in fifth place in the Northern Premier League table, one point ahead of local rivals Ashton United.

The Tigers shot themselves in the foot just 13 minutes into the match when forward Matty Fearnley’s poor back pass was latched onto by Declan Howe who slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead.

Hyde responded instantly, drawing themselves level less than two minutes later when Harry Ditchfield picked the ball up from 25 yards out and unleashed a right-footed thunderbolt into the top right corner, which kissed the post on its way in.

Nick Spooner’s men were only level for a matter of moments though, gifting the visitors another soft goal almost immediately after equalising, giving the ball away cheaply in the final third and allowing Javelle Clarke to slot the ball home from the cutback.

The away side then had the ball in the net for a third time, only for Declan Howe’s effort to be ruled out for offside.

The Tigers then showed immense resilience to come from behind yet again, levelling the scoring at 2-2 just after the half-hour mark when winger Harry Bunn found space on the right and lashed the ball into the far corner.

After an enthralling first half, fans could be forgiven for thinking the second half would be just as exciting, but this wasn’t quite the case.

There were a couple of chances however, with the first coming to the visitors when Bobby Johnson forced a flying save from Sam Waller in the Hyde goal, who tipped over the midfielder's free-kick which seemed destined for the top right corner.

Hosts Hyde were then dealt a huge blow when captain Brad Roscoe was forced off the field through injury, he was replaced by Sonny Whittingham.

The only real chance for the home side came through winger Jack Redshaw, who was inches away from scoring late in the half when his effort from the edge of the box trickled wide of the left-hand post.

The away side then came close to nicking all three points just five minutes from time when a cheap giveaway by Sonny Whittingham gave Gainsborough a free run at goal, but the midfielder’s blushes were spared by the onrushing Sam Waller, who got down well to deny Trinity forward Declan Howe from the 1v1.

But it was honours even in the end with the match finishing 2-2, which seemed a fair result all things considered.

Visitors Gainsborough will be the happier of the two sides though, and the Tigers will no doubt see this as two points dropped.

Next up for them this weekend is an away trip to Workington on Saturday.
