Stalybridge Celtic issue statement following Duckworth controversy

Stalybridge Celtic have given clarity following reports their forward Joe Duckworth could be facing an extended period out of action after suffering an injury while playing for Midland League side Northwich Victoria on Tuesday night.

The incident, which resulted in the match against Dudley Town being abandoned, had sparked controversy and left questions surrounding Duckworth’s involvement in the fixture.

Rumours that Duckworth played under a false name were strongly denied by Northwich Victoria earlier today, who issued the following statement:

“There have been a number of allegations overnight that the club played Joe under a false name which is incorrect.

“We do acknowledge a mistake on the social media post as the initial squad did have Alex Hughes playing in the number 9 role but due to illness and the weather conditions, Alex was a late withdrawal from the squad that had already been sent to the social media team.

“Joe, who is a registered player with the club, was travelling to watch the game with Lee and agreed to play.

“Joe tried to contact the Stalybridge manager to let him know what was happening but was unable to do so, but as this had been ok before there wasn’t an expectation that this was an issue and so Joe played. Conversations have taken place between the two clubs today over the misunderstanding.”

Stalybridge Celtic have since launched an internal investigation regarding the situation, and said in a statement this evening (January 9):

"The Club wishes to provide a comprehensive update following our earlier statement issued on Wednesday, January 8th.
