Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs wear muzzles because they’re aggressive or challenging. And Dogs Trust Manchester is trying to change this misconception.
Dogs Trust Manchester, which has a rehoming centre in Denton, is trying to educate the public about muzzled dogs. In the hopes that this will help dogs who wear muzzles find their forever home more easily.
The perception is that dogs wear muzzles because they’re dangerous or difficult. However, in reality, dogs wear muzzles for various reasons, and they can be an essential management tool to help dogs live their best life.
Reasons for dogs to wear muzzles include for safety when they’re ill or unwell, to prevent them from eating food they shouldn’t eat when on strict dietary requirements, and to support responsible ownership. Unfortunately, most people assume the worst when they see a dog wearing a muzzle.
Hannah Harris, Behaviour Policy Manager at Dogs Trust, said, “Dogs are muzzled for a range of reasons, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they are likely to show aggressive behaviours, as some may assume, and muzzle training can be a positive and fun experience.”
“This training is very important, as a dog being confident and comfortable wearing a muzzle is extremely useful, as you never know when it may come in handy, and don’t fret – dogs can still enjoy their walks, pant freely, drink water, and of course, have treats, with a well-fitted muzzle on.”
As an example, a dog named Patch has been waiting to be adopted since July 2025.
Having spent the early part of his life without ever being walked, he had lots to learn about the world around him. As part of his ongoing training, Patch wears a muzzle on walks while he continues to build positive experiences around other dogs.
Patch is looking for a patient adopter who understands dogs that can feel overwhelmed by others, and who can continue his training while giving him the time he needs to settle.
Dogs Trust Manchester is open to the public five days a week. You don't need an appointment to visit, see the dogs looking for homes, get advice or apply to adopt. As every dog is unique, finding the perfect match can take some time, several months in some cases. Applications to adopt last three months, and the team will do everything they can to find the right dog for you, however long it takes.
