Twelve week course offers new skills and confidence building to Tameside residents who are out of work
A free creative course at a Tameside arts centre is offering local people a new start this September.
Get Creative at The Vale in Mossley promises access to a wide range of creative skills in a relaxed and friendly environment. Running for 12 weeks from Wednesday 17 September 2025, it is open to everyone aged 16+ who lives in Tameside and is currently not working.
Organised by Carnival arts organisation Global Grooves, activities will include mask and costume making and textiles creation. Working together, participants will also have the chance to contribute towards a public art event.
No previous experience is necessary to join the course and the organisers are particularly keen to hear from people who are aged over 50. Self employed people who are only working part time are also eligible to sign up. The course runs until Wednesday 10 December 2025.
Jane Harris, community engagement lead, Global Grooves, said: "This course is open to people who enjoy being creative and who want to build confidence and explore new possibilities. If you're looking to make a change, but are not sure where to start, this course is for you.
"Joining a course is not only a great way to try something new but it can lead to life changing opportunities."
Jayne McLean Kremer, 58, took part in a similar free course in 2021. The Mossley resident had been out of employment for many years due to caring responsibilities. After 'getting back in the saddle', Jayne went on to set up her own business, called Good Earth Community.
Her social enterprise is doing so well, the former park ranger is now looking to take on people to help out with her work creating community permaculture gardens and getting people of all ages involved with nature.
She said: "After many years out of paid employment, spent caring for family members, I felt like my skills were out of date and my confidence low.
"It was so good just to get out there and meet nice, friendly people and learn some new skills. I met people of all ages and backgrounds and made some really good connections that have helped me to start working for myself. For me, making the decision to sign up for a free course at The Vale was the start of something really big."
Get Creative is funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and WEA (Workers' Educational Association)
