Postal voters in Tameside invited to renew their applications

Tameside residents who vote by post are being reminded to renew their applications under new Government rules that came into effect last year.

Postal votes now expire after three years, and anyone who has held their postal vote since before 31 October 2023 must reapply by 31 January 2026 to continue voting by post in future elections.

To make the process as smooth as possible, Tameside Council has begun contacting affected voters via email. Those without an email address will receive a letter. However, residents do not need to wait to be contacted, reapplications can be submitted online at any time.

The easiest and fastest way to renew is through the official Government website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

Public computers with internet access are also available at all local libraries for those who need them.

Tameside Council Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer Harry Catherall said: “We have started this process now to give electors the best opportunity to apply before the deadline and we welcome applications at the earliest opportunity. You don’t need to wait until we contact you - you can reapply online as soon you like.”

Residents are being advised to stay alert for scam emails. Tameside Council will not ask for any personal details via email. Instead, genuine messages will direct electors to the official GOV.UK site to complete the renewal.

All official communications will come from the Government Notify Service, sent by Tameside Electoral Services via this email: electoral.services.tameside@notifications.service.gov.uk Messages will be personally addressed to each voter.
