In May 1968, Queen Elizabeth II was driven through streets packed with cheering crowds on a visit to mark and acknowledge the part played by local people, councils and industry under the banner of Operation Spring Clean.
In Dukinfield and Hyde, she met civic leaders and others who had led the big clean campaign, seeing the improvements made to rid industrial and other areas of years of blight.
Crowds lined both sides of Market Street in Mottram as the Royal car swept by, closely followed by press photographers on the back of an open top truck.
Pupils waving flags and cheering had been brought down Church Brow from Mottram Primary School to see the Queen and they were rewarded by a smile and a wave from her Majesty.
