St. Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Ashton hosted their very own Arts Award Presentation with the Civic Mayor of Tameside Councillor Shibley Alam in attendance.

The civic mayor was also joined by Mr Jim Fitzpatrick and local ward councillor, Councillor Kaleel Khan.

The event celebrated the hard work of Year 6 pupils, each undertaking lots of learning which resulted in them achieving their Arts Award DISCOVER.

Some of the arts-based activities involved working with professional artist Caroline Coates, where each pupil learnt new creative processes that they could use to support the work they were doing linked to the Staying Safe, focusing on road safety theme.

Pupils were able to master new techniques, learn all about Caroline whilst working together to create unique roadside banners.

These banners will go on display outside of school.

Charlotte Youd, assistant headteacher, said: “We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils for the creativity, effort and enthusiasm they have shown throughout this project.

“The Arts Award has given them the chance to work with a professional artist, learn new skills and see their ideas brought to life in a way that also benefits the wider community.

“It has been inspiring to see them grow in confidence and take pride in their achievement and work towards a project we are very passionate about which is safety on our roads around school.”

She added: “We feel this project really helps to capture our vision of growing and learning to become the best we can be and contribute successfully to the safety of our community.”

Arts Award supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders in their communities.

Tameside is committed to helping young people achieve their goals in this area by providing opportunities and support for them to flourish and develop.

The Arts Award is facilitated through the support of Tameside Council’s Cultural and Community Safety Services.

They work to improve young people’s lives by increasing opportunities for participation in arts, culture and creative learning.
