Alex Cann

Alex presents the Tameside Radio morning show.

He's partial to a bubble bath, a lot of trips to the cinema, and is also a bit of a politics geek.

He's a great knowledge of chart music from across the decades, and presented on many different UK radio stations for the last 21 years, but most of all loves being a big part of the Tameside Radio team.

His favourite dessert is tiramisu, and his wife has the same birthday as him, a fact she is not a fan of.

  I've recently started going for an evening walk most nights. Nothing hugely remarkable about that, you may think, but it's made a huge difference to my mental health. I toyed with the idea of writing a piece entirely about the week's political events, but frankly I find it all too depressing. The divisive rhetoric, the inflammatory language, pitting communities against each other...I increasingly feel like I don't recognise the place where I was born and have spent almost five decades living.

  A couple of spooky offerings this week, starting with the excellent Exit 8. Video game adaptions can be ropey, from the 1993 Super Mario Bros to Angry Birds and A Minecraft Movie (although the latter was popular with audiences, some of whom threw their popcorn when Jack Black's annoying character shouted 'Chicken Jockey', for no apparent reason). However, Exit 8 is the real deal.

  Back in March, celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley -Whittingstall clashed with the health secretary at the time, Victoria Atkins, over what he claimed was the government's failure to tackle the obesity crisis. Measures such as limits on special offers and banning junk food adverts before 9pm were kicked into the long grass until at least October 2025. Separately, reports have suggested that the pandemic made obesity rates significantly worse among children, as unhealthy eating habits and a lack of exercise became the norm.

  A gentle reminder that British Summer Time ends at 2am on Sunday 27th October, and the clocks 'fall back'. There's a survey for everything, and in 2019, a YouGov poll found that 59% of Brits would prefer to remain permanently in BST.

  I was shocked to read a report recently into the scale of shoplifting at Co-op stores. Despite the chain returning pre-tax profits of £58 million for the first half of the year,  they were hit with huge costs from theft and fraud amounting to almost £40 million, amid a shoplifting epidemic.

  Back in the day, I used to love watching Top Of The Pops on a Thursday night. It was one of the telly highlights of the week, at a time when there were only three channels, no social media, and Dial-A-Disc was still a thing (ask your parents if this doesn't ring a bell).

  The UK has a rich history when it comes to condiments. A lot add unami taste to our dishes (a Japanese word meaning 'savoury deliciousness'), and a survey carried out recently by Fentimans found brown sauce ranks second in a list of the UK's top 10 favourite bold flavours.

  The Reel cinema chain has put a cat among the pigeons by opting to ban all food and drink brought into its screens that’s been bought elsewhere. If you’re a regular cinemagoer like me, you’ll be aware that the price of a bag of Revels or a large salted popcorn is on the eye-watering side, even with a loyalty discount via the likes of Cineworld Unlimited.

  Every now and then, a film comes along that audiences love, but the critics love to hate. A Minecraft Movie and Karate Kid: Legends are recent examples of this phenomenon, but Michael is perhaps the ultimate. I read a few reviews before heading to see it at the weekend (at a surprisingly busy early morning screening), and had been assured it was "bad, bad, really really bad" by one critic.

  With it being Halloween week, it's worth mentioning that horror has had a rather lucrative year at the cinema, with movies such as The Substance, Terrifier 3 and Smile 2 all delighting audiences and smashing their budgets at the box office.

• Alex's Weekly Film Blog - 17th October

  There's often a debate about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. In my book, it absolutely is. It contains four Christmas songs in the soundtrack, the action takes place at a Christmas Eve office party, and both the director and scriptwriter say it is a festive movie.

• Alex's Weekly Film Blog - 10th October

  I find myself at odds with most reviews I've read of Joker: Folie a Deux, as I thoroughly enjoyed it. As the latest edition of The Rest Is Entertainment points out, musicals are very difficult to market. Wonka and Mean Girls are recent examples of musicals where it was pretty well concealed in the trailers, until you went to see them and realised everyone was, er, singing.

• Alex's Weekly Film Blog - 3rd October

  It's almost impossible to review The Substance without spoilers, but I'll try. It's grisly, bone-crunching, shockingly gory stuff, but what a performance from Demi Moore. This is possibly the most bananas movie I've ever seen, and Moore's finest hour in my book.

• Alex's Weekly Film Blog - 26th September

  It's a rarity, but a trio of films were all released last Friday that I couldn't wait to see. I've managed two of them this week, and both are outstanding.

• Alex's Weekly Film Blog - 19th September

  Starting this week with my film of the month for September. Strange Darling is grisly and twisty as hell The best review I've seen comes from rapper Kid Cudi, who wrote: "Movies like this come every so often. As a fan of horror, I've never been this thrown by a horror movie before. I went in thinking one thing, and left knowing another". The difficulty in reviewing this movie is that it's definitely best enjoyed without spoilers. It's gory, tense, and nerve shredding.

  I decided to catch up on the original Beetlejuice last week, and realised I'd somehow never seen it! A shocking omission, I confess, but I really enjoyed the 1988 classic. You can find it on Amazon Prime Video.
