Former tower captain hangs up bells after Jubilee tribute

As the Thanksgiving Service to mark the Queen's 70 years of service took place at St Paul's Cathedral, the bells of All Saints Parish Church rang out across Glossop.

The tower team rang the eight bells from 11.30am to 12noon last Friday (3 June) and were joined by 87-year-old former tower captain Derek Marbeck. 

It was a fitting way to mark his many years of service as he has stood down after ringing the bells at the church for 46 years. 

Paying tribute to Derek’s contribution, current Tower Captain Andrew Fearnley said it was thanks to his efforts that the bells underwent a major refurbishment in 2017. 

The current ring of eight bells were installed in 1923 and have been rung ever since. They are last set of working bells in Glossopdale.

Andrew said: “We are really pleased to be able to ring for this type of public occasion.”
