Man who sued prison wanted in connection with theft

Police are hunting a career criminal who once sued prison authorities over an infestation of bedbugs.

Romanian national Neculai Todirenchi, 46, who has links to Ashton and Failsworth is wanted on suspicion of theft.

Todirenchi has numerous convictions in both the UK and Romania and tried to claim €130,000 in damages in 2024 after saying his three-year detention at Iași Prison – close to the border with Moldova - was “inhumane” and “amounted to torture with bedbugs and without medical care”.

However, magistrates rejected his claims calling them “exorbitant and unjustified” and instead awarded his 1,000 lei - approximately £170.

  • Chesterfield v Latics: bad and good news

Let’s start with the bad news. James Reade, economics professor at Reading university, has been in touch about my assertion last week that Latics require 1.8333 points per game to reach 71 points. By his calculations, which are far more trustworthy than mine – who says you won’t amount to anything without GCSE maths? – Latics will need more than 71 points to clinch seventh place this season. Professor Reade reckons the target is a minimum of 74 points.
