Stalybridge Celtic moved into the NPL West play-off spots on Saturday after a 5-0 thumping of Newcastle Town.

Latics have won four games and drawn two, including last week’s stand-off against leaders Bromley at Hayes Lane, and the season is back in the balance. Tranmere Rovers were there to be hammered at Prenton Park, and Latics obliged. Tequila!

This was one of the good days. Latics were dominant: craftier, harder-working, more resolute and more ruthless than their opponents, better man-for-man, better as a team.

Latics’ last visit to Prenton Park was memorable for lots of reasons. In beating Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup 1st Round in November 2024, Latics were signalling unambiguous intent and capability in what became the season when they won promotion out of the National League.
