Hillmen denied fifth straight win

Glossop RUFC were on course for their fifth straight win on Saturday as they led Leigh 22-15, but an incident unfortunately led to the match being abandoned.

It was all going so well for The Hillmen, as lively scrumhalf Joe Richardson chased a kick through and was there to dot down when the visiting fullback made a hash of tidying it up.

Tom Dearnaley missed the conversion, but Glossop had an early 5-0 lead.

This didn’t last long though as Leigh got a try of their own and converted it to lead 7-5.

Glossop’s forwards were on top in the close quarters against a beefy Leigh pack and prop Conor Grime battered his way over to regain the lead 10-7.

Shortly after this, Captain Zak Round put in a tackle breaking run and a deft kick through but Glossop couldn’t capitalise on it.

Unfortunately, Round was injured in the process and left the field for lengthy treatment.

There was a further try for the home side, with winger Winterbottom finishing brilliantly after being put away by Dearnaley.

Leigh got a penalty shortly afterwards to see the score 15-10.

A minor scuffle broke out as the referee blew for halftime.

After the break, Leigh got another try after running through some weak Glossop tackling.

At 15-15 Glossop continued their domination though and amid a couple of high tackles from each side, which largely went unpunished by the ref, backrow Tennant got what should have been the bonus point try for Glossop with a stunning solo run.

Dearnaley converted and Glossop looked comfortable with a deserved 22-15 lead.

Unfortunately, shortly after this, during a tackle in midfield, a little altercation took place, that quickly escalated with continued fighting spread across the whole of the pitch.

The outcome of this was that Glossop had one player red carded, and the referee felt it was unsafe to continue.

There was no ill feeling or animosity amongst the opposing players as in time honoured fashion both sides clapped each other off to enjoy their meals and beers in the clubhouse afterwards.

As the playing time hadn’t passed the required 60 minutes minimum, the game will have to be replayed.

Next week Glossop travel to Garstang.

A few weeks ago on these pages, after Latics had lost three games in a row, conceding three goals in each game, I wrote them off for the season. Consolidation achieved, but with an unfulfilled objective to entertain and compete. Latics have won four games and drawn two, including last week’s stand-off against leaders Bromley at Hayes Lane, and the season is back in the balance. Tranmere Rovers were there to be hammered at Prenton Park, and Latics obliged. Tequila!

This was one of the good days. Latics were dominant: craftier, harder-working, more resolute and more ruthless than their opponents, better man-for-man, better as a team.
