New Mills sign Mossley midfielder

New Mills AFC have confirmed the signing of versatile player Cheikh Thiam on a dual registration deal.

Mossley AFC is the 17-year-old’s parent club but he has only made five first-team appearances for the Lilywhites so far this season.

Thiam, who can play at right-back or as a right-winger, made his debut for the Millers in Tuesday night’s 4-0 defeat at Wythenshawe Town.

He also counts Shrewsbury Town among his former clubs and is regarded by many in the non-league circuit as a promising talent.

It’s another good signing from joint-managers Dave Birch and Mike Norton.

Thiam will already know some of the Millers squad well, especially Adam Jones, who arrived at Church Lane from Mossley last month.

Not for the first time, Micky Mellon is absolutely coherent with the Latics fans. In praising his side’s Christmas campaign-within-a-campaign, he said he wants his side to turn draws into wins, and to be “that wee bit more clinical” in front of goal. That is all it would take for Latics to be serious contenders for a play-off place.
