Fun and information at Tameside walking and cycling consultation

Tameside residents have been having their say on how to improve cycling and walking networks across Greater Manchester.

At Ashton Market last Tuesday, people of all ages gathered to test their abilities on a temporary cycle track. There were also guided walks and a host of gazebos and stalls filled with information on the consultation.

British Cycling brought along their ‘Ready Set Ride’ course and balance bikes for youngsters to try out, alongside promoting bike safety and local cycling groups.

Active Tameside joined in to promote their range of bike circuits, events and their role in getting the borough healthier.

Local business Birdy’s Bike Shed were on hand to lead a ten-mile ‘social ride’ along the Daisy Nook Cycle Route and brought along their cycle repair stand to help out those in need.

The Mayor’s Challenge Fund has given approval in principal to 11 requests by Tameside Council - which include new and extended cycle lanes, new crossings and junction alterations. In total, the schemes will cost £11million.

The consultation will run until 6 March and seeks residents’ views on the plans, which aim to make travelling around Tameside safer, greener and more attractive. Tameside council say: “Walking and cycling is not only better for health but also reduces congestion and improves air quality.”

If you would like to find out more, there are still 2 more consultation events taking place. The first is on Friday 28 February, between 10am - 1pm at the Rutherford Suite in Hyde Town Hall. The other is on Tuesday 3 March, from 2-4pm at Stalybridge Civic Hall.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Councillor Brenda Warrington said: “We want residents to have their say so that we can develop these exciting schemes in line with public feedback. And we not only want to provide the infrastructure but also help people gain the skills to cycle confidently and safely. Tuesday’s event will be fun and informative and give residents the chance to get involved, try out activities and find out more about groups and trails.”
